Horror Movie: Obsession
The horror film Obsession was written by Curry Barker. He developed the script for his studio feature debut while working at a coffee shop.
Plot Points
- The Unrequited Crush: Bear, a socially awkward man, is deeply in love with his long-time friend and co-worker, Nikki. After failing to confess his feelings, he discovers a supernatural artifact called the One Wish Willow.
- The Inciting Wish: Desperate for her affection, Bear breaks the willow and wishes for Nikki to love him more than anything else in the world.
- The Escalation: Nikki immediately transforms from a distant friend into an intensely affectionate and devoted partner. However, the magic functions like a “monkey’s paw” curse; her devotion rapidly spirals into a terrifying, possessive, and violent fixation.
- The Carnage: Nikki begins eliminating anyone she views as a threat to their relationship. This includes murdering their mutual friend and co-worker, Ian.
- The Climax & Twin Wishes: Trapped in a bathroom and realizing his wish has ruined their lives, Bear decides to consume a lethal dose of pills to end the nightmare. While he is doing this, Nikki breaks her own One Wish Willow in the next room and wishes for Bear to be equally obsessed with her.
- The Tragic Twist: The second wish takes effect instantly, causing Bear to happily step out of the bathroom to embrace her. Moments later, the pills kick in, and Bear collapses and dies in her arms.
- The Aftermath: Because Bear dies, the original spell over Nikki instantly breaks. She snaps back to her true self only to find herself surrounded by blood, dead bodies, and stolen money, facing total ruin for crimes she committed under supernatural coercion.
While Obsession (2025/2026) has been described by critics as a modern-day Fatal Attraction re-tread, the two films differ fundamentally in their catalysts, supernatural elements, and thematic focus on consent. Both explore the terrifying descent of an intense romance into violence, but they approach the stalker archetype from entirely opposite directions.
The 1987 psychological thriller Fatal Attraction had a production budget of approximately $14 million
The 2025 horror thriller Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, was made on a reported production budget of $750,000.
