Squeezed out my dorm window, shimmied up the fire escape like some kinda urban monkey, and boom\u2014rooftop. Leaned over the edge, staring at the campus below. Cars crawling like ants. People shuffling under those orange streetlights. Not pretty. Not ugly. Just…there. Kinda like me, I guess. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

God, I’m nobody’s idea of handsome. Not hideous either. Just…me. Same as this shitty college I’m starting to despise. Straight C’s this semester. Learning jack shit. What’s waiting for me after this place? More debt and a future flipping burgers, probably. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My parents? Loaded. Me? Not so much. They’re cool, they love me, they’ll bail me out within reason\u2014but Jesus, I’m such a fuckup. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then Dabby materializes beside me like a weird ghost. “What’re you doing?”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dabby’s this goofy barnacle that latches onto me sometimes. Usually he just parks his ass next to me silently\u2014reading, eating, bouncing a ball against the wall. Tonight? He’s chatty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Moonlight catches his dumb face as I say, “Dunno. Taking in the view before I drop out tomorrow. Straight C’s, man. Wasting everyone’s money.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He nods. “I flunked out. Whole department’s rigged\u2014half those kids bought answers.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Seriously?” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Nah.” He grins. “But that’s what I’m telling my folks. Gotta rehearse the lies, y’know? Failing doesn’t bug me. Being a letdown? That stings.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Same,” I mutter. “Gonna officially quit tomorrow.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dabby shrugs. “Know a guy who can hack our grades. Five grand, though.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“What’s the point? Truth always leaks.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Guess so.” Pause. “You weren’t…thinking about jumping, right?” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“What? No. Just saying goodbye to this dump.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
