Your Local ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC Station May Have to Give Up Their FOTA TV Channel
On April 15, Landover Saturn 5 LLC filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission urging regulators to launch a formal rulemaking process aimed at repurposing a significant portion of the UHF broadcast spectrum. The company specifically targeted television Channels 28 through 36, spanning frequencies from 554 to 608 MHz, seeking to clear this block for flexible use in support of future 6G wireless services as first reported by BroadbandBreakfast. If approved by the FCC, this would force TV stations that use channels 28 through 36 to move to a new channel so that it could be used for 6G wireless service.
6G is expected to be significantly better than 5G in performance, offering up to 100 times faster speeds (1 Tbps), 1000 times lower latency, and better network capacity. It aims to connect intelligence, facilitating advanced AI, holograms, and massive IoT. However, 6G may face challenges similar to 5G, such as needing higher frequency bands (like THz) which have shorter ranges and require denser infrastructure.
Potential Benefits: Despite potential challenges, 6G is designed to be more energy-efficient (100 times more than 5G) and support massive IoT connectivity, which could improve efficiency and performance.
