“The Ballad of Rainy Crawfish Jones”

[Verse 1]
Well, the road to Lasso was a ribbon of clay,
Rain kept fallin’ all the livelong day.
An Appaloosa mare named Mazer picked her way along,
Carryin’ Rainy Crawfish Jones where he’d been gone too long.
His hat was pulled low, his duster soaked through,
That muddy trail remembered everything he’d do.

[Verse 2]
Henry Oaks stood easy by a weathered porch post,
At Mr. Pup’s Saloon where the whiskey flowed most.
Good-lookin’ in blue jeans with a holster on his side,
A slow cigar burnin’ with a devil’s kind of pride.
Sheriff Danny Perkins rocked back in his chair,
Young enough for dreams, old enough to care.

[Chorus]
In Lasso, Kansas, where the dust and memories meet,
Every stranger leaves a story on that lonely street.
Some are bought with silver, some are paid with pain,
Some ride out in sunshine, some ride home in rain.
The cards keep turnin’, the old songs never change,
Life can feel like heaven… till somebody calls your name.

[Verse 3]
The sheriff tipped his hat and grinned just a little wide.
“Rainy, I ran you out about this time last year,” he cried.
Rainy laughed and answered, “Sheriff, that’s all gone.
That’s last year’s water under the bridge and drifted on.”
Danny shook his head. “Seems you’re forgettin’ then…
You also left this town after killin’ two good men.”

[Verse 4]
Rainy shrugged his shoulders. “It was fair from where I stood.
They drew before I answered, and I reckon that ain’t good.
I ain’t come to raise no trouble, I ain’t come to boast.
Just lookin’ for a lady and a little friendly toast.”
Henry puffed his cigar through a lazy cloud of smoke.
“Mr. Pup’s girls these days’ll leave your wallet broke.”

[Verse 5]
Rainy winked at Henry with a grin both sly and deep.
“I figured you were cheaper than the company they keep.”
The porch erupted laughin’; Henry tipped his hat.
“My brother owns another place that’s better after that.”
Before another sentence ever found the evening air,
Two bouncers stormed the doorway with a hard and ugly stare.

[Bridge]
One grabbed Henry’s shoulder, one reached for his vest.
Henry dropped his cigar and gave ’em both his best.
A table hit the doorway, boots flew through the rain,
The sheriff never moved much, just watched the whole campaign.
Rainy leaned on Mazer, smiling calm and slow.
Sometimes the best entertainment is another fellow’s show.

[Final Chorus]
In Lasso, Kansas, where tomorrow ain’t a vow,
Every man gets measured by the choices he makes now.
Some are quick with pistols, some are quick with jokes,
Some survive on whiskey, some survive on hope.
Rainy rode in peaceful, though the town had other plans,
That’s just another chapter in the life of western men.

[Outro]
When the muddy road was moonlit and the stars began to shine,
Old Mazer pawed the ground while the church bell marked the time.
Folks still sing in Lasso when the fiddle starts to play,
‘Bout Rainy Crawfish Jones… and the fight at Pup’s that day.
